who we help/travis' story
Travis is 25, and two years ago was asked to leave his family home by his mum, after stealing from her to fund his growing heroin addiction. Travis found himself sleeping rough.
He came to our Riverside project in February. Riverside provides accommodation to young people who are committed to taking part in training, education or voluntary work.
Travis underwent a methadone programme and has now been completely drug free for 6 months. As part of his commitment to changing his lifestyle, he attended an outdoor pursuits course with Fairbridge, an organisation that provides training and personal development to inner city youth. The staff liked him so much, they asked him to come back as a volunteer. By the end of the year Travis will have completed enough training to qualify as a youth worker, and hopes to be offered a full-time job with Fairbridge.
His aim for the future is “To help kids so that they don’t make the same mistakes as me and go down the path that I did”
