The Wallich AGM 2007
09.10.07
With research released in the news this week revealing that unlike the rest of the country, it is now cheaper to rent a property in Wales than buy one, one charity is making it easier for those on low incomes to access comfortable, safe, private rented homes.
On October 11th, we held the Grand Opening of our new premises on Cathedral Road in Cardiff, and combined this event with our Annual General Meeting.
The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan officiated the opening ceremony, cutting the ribbon to open the doors to the converted Presbyterian Church, now called ‘The Wallich Centre’.
Over 70 guests including staff from housing and homelessness agencies, Local Authorities and partner organisations came to listen to guest speakers, and look around our new administration base and training centre.
The Honorary President of The Wallich, Archbishop of Wales Dr Barry Morgan, who this summer chaired an independent enquiry into homelessness and poor housing in Wales, officially opened the Centre and talked about his findings during the enquiry and the heart-rending personal stories behind some of the cases he encountered. He also called on the Welsh Assembly Government to honour its commitment to tackling homelessness.
The Wallich supports hundreds of homeless and vulnerable people every day in 30 projects in 12 Local Authorities across Wales. Chief Executive, Stephen Gamgee talked about the excellent work The Wallich has been carrying out in these projects over the past year, and said about the new administration base for the charity;
“Not only has our new base given us a better environment from which we can effectively administer the organisation, but it means we will save money in years to come by having our own training facilities and meeting rooms, and by saving on rent. We felt it was important to be part of a local community. We also like the idea that we have helped a much loved building to come back into use.”
The second guest speaker was talented Welsh author Rachel Trezise, winner of the inaugural Dylan Thomas Prize for Fiction, who spent time living on the streets as a teenager. Rachel talked about her own experiences of homelessness and read from one of her novels, detailing the hard, brutal edges of childhood and adolescence in the poverty stricken South Wales valleys. Rachel’s reading was thought provoking, and very moving, giving a first hand account of the realities faced by the people The Wallich helps.
The fantastic guest speakers, and the opportunity to highlight our work ensured a successful and well received event. Thank you to everyone who came to support us. Thanks too, to the Green Shoots catering service, a social firm established to offer training and employment opportunities for people who face disadvantage and barriers to employment, who provided the buffet for the event.
