Wrexham Homeless Hostel Celebrates Milestone
23.04.09
A hostel that supports homeless people in Wrexham celebrates its first birthday tomorrow and will host a celebration and information day for other housing service providers, support agencies and clients.
The Wallich St John’s Hostel provides a safe, secure, temporary home for eleven homeless men and women, along with a dedicated and comprehensive personal development plan for each resident, outlining how they want their life to change and how the staff can help them achieve their goals. Their first birthday is a chance to look back on their successes in supporting vulnerable people over the past year.
St John’s Hostel helps people like Daniel, 19, who had become estranged from his parents after getting involved in drugs. Daniel was asked to leave his family home after the police carried out a drugs raid. During his stay, St John's Hostel provided Daniel with all the support he needed to help him address his drug issue and also find his first tenancy. Daniel has now been living in his own one bedroom flat for three months and is doing very well. He still visits St John's hostel for a cup of tea, support and advice from the staff and other residents.
St John’s has been in operation since 1992 but was taken over by The Wallich, a leading homelessness charity in April 2008.
Sharon Towers, the North East Wales Team Leader says the staff and clients have enjoyed the transition in becoming part of The Wallich charity and are looking forward to celebrating the Wallich’s first year in Wrexham.
“The staff and clients at St John’s have put a great deal of determination and hard work into making the transition a success. We have gained support from a number of local agencies and developed many positive working relationships in the local area. We are looking forward to building on this success over the next twelve months and continuing to support vulnerable people to re-build their lives.”
Editor’s Notes
The Information Day will begin at 1.30pm on Friday 24th April. Press are invited to attend. Stephen Gamgee MBE, Chief Executive of The Wallich, will attend the event and will be available for interview and photographs on request.
The Wallich (formerly the Wallich Clifford Community) is a vital charity providing support to homeless and vulnerable housed people. It works together with clients, other agencies and government to deliver innovative solutions to homelessness that offer much more than just shelter. The services the Wallich offers are as diverse as the people it works with; humanitarian aid for rough sleepers, direct access hostels, longer term accommodation, training, education, job coaching, mediation and support in maintaining tenancies.
