Learning to Beat Homelessness
07.10.09

On Friday October 9th, staff and residents from leading homelessness charity The Wallich will celebrate their outstanding learning achievements over the past year at an awards ceremony.

The Wallich is a Wales-based charity which works with homeless and vulnerably housed people to find the accommodation and support which will help them to live safer, happier and more independent lives. They run nearly 50 projects across Wales including hostels, tenancy support and outreach schemes.

Some of their 200 staff will gather in Cardiff to receive NVQ qualifications in Advice and Guidance.

The people they support will stand alongside them to receive their Profile of Achievement, which is a way to formally recognise the huge steps Wallich residents have taken to turn their lives around. It celebrates improved life skills, increased confidence, academic success and, above all, personal growth.

In line with Government recommendations that hostels and services for homeless people become places of change, providing positive activities such as learning and training, The Wallich believes strongly that learning can play an important part in a person's eventual progression into independent living. Residents who have completed a Profile of Achievement have gained confidence and have gained the self esteem to apply for further education courses and employment and accessed social networks they might not otherwise have been aware of.

The Achievement Ceremony will reward residents and staff for their continued hard work, and give them the opportunity to celebrate their successes together.

Editors Notes:

The Achievement Ceremony will begin at 1pm on Friday 9th October at the Wallich Centre, Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF11 9JH.
