Rough Guide to Rough Sleeping launched in a ‘Cardboard World’ at The Senedd
27.11.09

On Monday November 30th, The Wallich, a Wales based homelessness charity, will be launching a unique publication and bringing a ‘Cardboard World’ to The Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

‘The Rough Guide to Rough Sleeping in Cardiff’ is a pocket size, waterproof booklet offering hints and tips on how to stay safe on the streets and where to go to access help.

It has been written by a former rough sleeper, Marky Quinn.

Marky used to be a chef, and he used to have a flat, but problems with violent and threatening neighbours meant he found himself homeless and he slept rough on the streets of Cardiff on and off for over two years. He has slept in car parks, doorways, and a bush in Bute Park. He has lived without possessions, without food, and without dignity, and at times, has struggled to survive.

However, his story is a happy one. After meeting The Wallich Rough Sleepers Intervention Team, Marky was referred to a hostel, and from there, was referred to longer term accommodation where he was able to recover from an alcohol addiction, and get support to turn his life around.

Marky decided that he wanted to give something back to the people who had supported him, and help others who were in the same desperate situation he was in a few years ago. He decided to write a booklet to help Rough Sleepers access the services and support that could help them improve their situation.

His hard work and tenacity have finally paid off, and he will see the fruits of his labour in print for the first time at The Senedd on 30th November. The Deputy Housing Minister for Wales, Jocelyn Davies AM, will be speaking at the launch.

In order to provide an interesting visual element to the launch, and to highlight the issue of rough sleeping in Wales, The Wallich has been working with an artist to produce an installation which will be displayed on the day. Vincenzo Raccuglia will be spending the weekend building houses made from cardboard in the public area of The Senedd.

At a time when housing and homelessness will be high on the public agenda, in the run up to Christmas, the event at The Senedd hopes to bring the issue of rough sleeping to the forefront and come up with ways to tackle and alleviate the difficulties it causes.

The event will begin at 10am, with the official launch and a speech by the Deputy Housing Minister for Wales, Jocelyn Davies AM, at 10.30am.
